Practical answers for preparing drawings, understanding evidence and keeping your review moving.

A project starts with the basics.
Enter a project title and jurisdiction. Your practice project number is optional. You can upload files immediately, then complete the project profile before analysis.
What is the review process?
- 01
Project setup
Start with a title and jurisdiction. Confirm the building classification and project details before analysis.
- 02
Files
Add architectural drawings and supporting information. Confirm document details and calibrate drawing scale where needed.
- 03
Review
Review the selected information against the sources included in the project scope, alongside your own professional observations.
- 04
Findings
Explore findings on the drawing, inspect their evidence and sources, and record your professional judgement.
- 05
Reports
Export findings, supporting evidence, recorded scope and review outcomes for design coordination.
How do I know whether my changes are saved?
Project setup distinguishes an unsaved edit, a saved draft and a confirmed profile. Save draft keeps the information for later; Confirm project profile provides the classification needed for analysis.
If you try to leave with unsaved work, CompliPlan asks whether to stay. This is protection against accidental navigation, not automatic saving. Keep the page open while uploads or reviews are in progress.
Do I need to answer every project question?
No. Add the information you know and save a draft if necessary. Unknown details remain visible as missing information. The building classification must be confirmed before analysis because it informs which regulatory provisions the engine should look for.
You can suggest details from readable uploaded files. Check each suggestion and its evidence before accepting it, then confirm the project profile.
02 / Files and drawing scale
Prepare the information once.
Which file types and sizes can I upload?
Project files support PDF, PNG, JPEG and WebP, up to 30 MB per file. ZIP drawing sets are unpacked into supported individual files. Unsupported archive entries are ignored and reported.
Use Drawings for drawing sheets and Supporting documents for specifications, strategies, schedules and other project information.
My upload has not worked. What should I check?
Check the file type and size, then read the error beside the upload control. Confirm that you have chosen at least one file and are signed in. The progress indicator counts files that have actually saved. After a partial failure, completed files are removed from the pending selection. Check the register before retrying if a connection was interrupted, as the server may have received the last file. If the problem continues, contact support with the file type, approximate size and exact error message.
Which calibration method should I use?
- Automatic setup · recommended
- Confirm an A0 to A6 page size, orientation and the drawing scale. You can correct a detected scale before saving.
- Manual page setup
- Enter the actual paper width, height and scale for a custom sheet.
- Known dimension
- Select two points and enter their real distance. A labelled dimension works; a scale bar is not required.
Browser zoom is separate from drawing scale. Resized or cropped sheets and drawings with several scales need particular care.
How can I give the drawing more space?
Select Focus drawing in its toolbar. Navigation and evidence panels move out of view while the drawing, pins and view controls remain available. Exit focus returns you to the same workspace. Escape also exits focus.
What are the drawing keyboard shortcuts?
Click or focus the drawing workspace first. Shortcuts do not run while you type into a field.
- + / −
- Zoom in or out.
- F / W / 0
- Fit page, fit width or return to 100% view.
- J / K
- Next or previous finding on this drawing.
- ] / [
- Next or previous drawing where a drawing set is available.
- Page Down / Page Up
- Next or previous PDF page.
- ? / Esc
- Show shortcuts, or close shortcuts and exit focus.
Must every drawing be calibrated?
Calibration is needed for measurements. Other review work can continue without it, with dimensional limitations recorded. Calibration applies to the selected page and view. Saving another page currently replaces that document’s calibration.
03 / Preparing a review
Be clear about what is checked.
What must be ready before analysis?
Confirm the project classification, select the current drawing set and review the regulatory scope. Automatic analysis also requires a connected review engine and indexed copies of the selected reference documents. The Review screen shows their readiness.
Why might a saved reference not be ready?
A stored PDF and a searchable reference are different states. The document must also be indexed for the analysis engine. Check its indexing status in Reference library. The readiness count includes only sources selected for that review. Indexing continues on the server. Use Refresh status to check progress; the document is available for analysis only when its status is Ready. If indexing fails, check the PDF and use Retry indexing.
What should I do if a review is interrupted?
Read the message and refresh Review history before running again. An interrupted browser connection does not prove the server stopped. Check whether a run completed and whether findings were saved to avoid submitting the same review twice.
Can I change the regulatory scope?
Core references are selected initially. You can include or exclude sources for the next review, including secondary guidance. Excluded sources are not checked. Each review retains its own scope and source record, including in reports.
What about England, Wales or Scotland?
Each has a separate jurisdiction selection. Reviews depend on the appropriate regional sources being uploaded, indexed and selected. Northern Ireland is the priority implementation.
04 / Findings and reports
Investigate the issue. Keep the evidence.
How should I read a finding?
Start with its title, classification, status and drawing location. Expand the evidence, requirement and citation to understand why it was surfaced. Check missing information, assumptions and any conflicting sources before deciding what to do.
Classification describes the issue. Workflow status records what the team has done with it. Neither is a certificate of compliance.
What do the finding actions do?
Challenge records your concern for further review. Add to actions includes the item in the action list. Mark addressed records that your team has dealt with it; it does not grant approval. A resolved finding can be reopened.
Which report should I export?
The full compliance review records findings and evidence. The open issue schedule focuses on outstanding design actions. Word and PDF exports are available in Reports. Check the recorded drawing revisions and regulatory scope before sharing.
Does CompliPlan replace professional review?
No. Findings need professional interpretation against the project circumstances and controlled sources. CompliPlan does not provide Building Control approval or certify a design as compliant.
